Greenland

[2010 CRUISE] | [ HOME ] | [ CRUISE HOME ]

First we cruised Prins Christian Sund where there are huge glaciers, many of which are active. The mountains on each side are 5,000 ft high. We encountered a rather large iceberg and sent a boat to get some ice. Then we had to maneuver around it carefully. We passed a settlement called Aqappilattoq and sent a small boat to deliver pizza and some supplies to the natives. We tendered off Qaqortoq (pronounced Ka Ko Tok). Greenland has only 57,000 inhabitants and their language is greenlandic. It is the worlds largest island. It is a dependency of Denmark which is seen in their colorful houses. Only the outer edges of the island are inhabited and no two cities are connected by roads. Travel between cities is by boat (except in winter when seas and fjords are frozen), plane and helicopter.
